There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the benefits of detoxing in regards to weight loss. And it is not hard to see why when so many celebrity diets are proven to be unhealthy and limited.
Yet despite this, there are actually many benefits to be gained from cleansing your body of poisonous toxins.
After all, if you are all ‘clogged’ up surely that would make your body less efficient? Of course it would!
Full of toxins and free radicals, your metabolism and ultimately your fat burn will slow down.
How do detox diets work?
The problem with many detox diets is that they aim to exclude many of your major foods groups, depriving your body of the necessary nutrients it needs to function.
However not all detox diets follow this system.
In fact, there are quite a few healthy detox diets which can provide you with a healthy diet. Take these food choices for instance. You are unlikely to feel deprived if you choose from this list wisely:
• Fruit – choose from fresh, frozen, dried or canned fruit i.e. apples, bananas, pears, oranges, grapefruit, satsumas, sultanas, raisins, pineapple, blackcurrants, peaches, melons etc
• Vegetables – similar to fruit these can be fresh, frozen or canned and include carrots, onions, turnips, swede, sprouts, cabbage, peppers, mushrooms, sweetcorn, peppers, leeks, courgettes, broccoli, cauliflower, salad, cucumber, spring onions etc.
• Beans and lentils – red kidney beans, haricot, cannellinis, butter beans, black eye, pinto, red lentils, green lentils and brown lentils
• Tofu and quorn
• Oats –sprinkle over fresh fruit or use to make a porridge
• Potatoes – all types
• Brown rice and rice noodles
• Rye crackers, rice cakes and oatcakes
• Fresh fish – cod, plaice, mackerel, salmon, lobster, crab, trout, haddock, tuna, prawns, Dover sole, red mullet, halibut, lemon sole, monkfish etc
• Unsalted nuts – brazil, peanuts, almonds, cashew, hazel nuts, macadamia, pecans, pine nuts, walnuts etc
• Unsalted seeds – sunflower and pumpkin
• Live natural yoghurt
• Extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar
• Water – at least 2 litres a day
Now the best detoxes should only be done for a short amount of time as even a healthy detox does not include everything. For example can you see anything missing from the list above?
Yes. Red meat, poultry and dairy products are nowhere in sight…
Yet this is not a good thing. Your body needs each of these food groups to supply your body with plenty of protein and calcium so you can build strong muscles and bones. For this reason, you should only detox once a month so your body can continue receiving the necessary nutrients it needs.
Healthy way to detox and lose weight
Nutritionists recommend following a balanced diet of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat when managing your weight (as well as fibre, vitamins etc).
However, if you are still interested in boosting your metabolic rate and cleansing your body of unnecessary toxins, incorporating a detox product can help.
Enriched in antioxidants, these drinks and supplements can help to eliminate free radicals and ensure your body is functioning efficiently.
